Greg Brown A New Direction Trustee

Greg Brown

Trustee - A New Direction 08

Greg Brown serves as Local 1782 President, representing three major airlines in five stations and two states. 1782 includes United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and British Airways, and stretches from San Francisco to Oakland, San Jose, Reno, and Sacramento.

Greg is a relentless unionist. To devote full attention to IAM duties, Greg gave up a lucrative second career in real estate. Within the IAM Local, Greg works collaboratively with our sister Local 1781 in joint monthly meetings. Agenda items include keeping the pressure on United Airlines for salary and benefit compliance with San Francisco's unique laws, innovating an affordable housing scheme to benefit Bay Area workers affected by steep contract concessions, and organizing social events throughout his five stations.

Greg is also the co-editor of Local 1782's award winning newsletter, The Fog Report, and the award winning Local1782.Org. Together, the newsletter and website swept five out of six possible awards, all in First Place, when judged by the IAM Grand Lodge. Greg's style of leadership in communications lays the groundwork for creative, progressive work that earns recognition.

Members of Local 1782 now have a greater voice in local and regional politics than ever, through Greg's constant interaction with regional labor groups and legislators. Members also have unprecedented access to corporate management due to Greg's reasoned balance between collaboration and arbitration.

Before the IAM organized United Airlines, Greg Brown personally filed charges against United Airlines with the California Labor Commissioner on behalf of co-workers. California upheld Greg's complaint, forcing United Airlines to clearly state employee hours worked on employee's pay stubs. Several months later, recognizing the need for union representation in San Francisco, Greg generated more than six hundred signature cards. Greg worked with the CWA union to transfer that support to the IAM, leading to an ultimate victory for the IAM in San Francisco.

With a mind set of relentless unionism, selflessness, and creativity, Greg Brown embodies the spirit of Rich Delaney and A New Direction 08for IAM District 141.
