To say that Laura Stone went into the family business would be an understatement. Her family has been a part of United Airlines for as long as she can remember. Laura’s dad (Pete Mazur) retired from the ramp in ORD, her brother (Dave Mazur) works on the ramp at ORD and her husband, Ralph Stone, has been at United for almost 44 years working on the ramp at ORD. Laura has been at United for almost 30 years, 25 of those years in Reservations. Knowing what the IAM did for her family made Laura an ideal organizer for the PCE group in 1997.

Laura worked as a negotiator for the first contract and once the contract was ratified, was elected as Committeeperson for Chicago Reservations representing more than 1,000 members. Laura commented, “It is my passion to serve the members and make sure they are treated fairly by the company.” Laura not only serves the membership in reservations but also serves the membership at District 141 as Vice President at Large.

“Putting the members first, is the first step towards change,” Laura explained. She further detailed that representation, organizing and politics go hand in hand, “You have to organize so you have strength in numbers. Once you represent and educate the members, they will make decisions at the voting booth that will protect the working class.”

Laura believes in this union but feels it needs to change direction. She said, “If you are interested in new leadership that will take our union in a new direction, vote for the New Direction team.” Laura is assured she will represent the membership with the utmost respect and looks forward to working with the membership to make our union stronger.
