Shawn Humpherys
Assistant General Chairperson
4 Year Term - A New Direction 08
Shawn Humpherys started working for United twenty-two years ago in IAD, nine years later he transferred to SLC. Since moving to SLC, Shawn has become an active member of his local lodge. He has served as Grievance Committee Chair, District 141 Educator, local lodge Vice President and he currently serves his membership as President. Shawn has gone through all four years of leadership courses at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center at Placid Harbor.
Shawn, like many activists, became involved in the union because of the way management treated those around him. Shawn felt he could make a difference for his fellow members and began his quest for knowledge. Shawn said, “I have gained a lot of experience in my years of representing the membership in the grievance procedure. I can use this knowledge to represent the membership at the elevated levels of the grievance process.”
Shawn understands the value of organizing, politics and representing. He reflected, “It’s so hard to say that one is more important than the other. They all go hand-in-hand.” He further explained, “Representation is obviously important, but organizing and politics have a great effect on our ability to effectively represent the members in an unrestricted manner.” He smiled and said, “Now go back and flip the words around, representing and politics have a great effect on our ability to effectively organize new members in an unrestricted manner.”
Shawn is ready to represent all the members of District 141. He has the ability to calmly assess any situation and will be an asset to the membership of District 141. |
